米・Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center／Harvard Medical SchoolのJulia W. Haas氏らは、新型コロナウイルス（SARS-CoV-2）ワクチンのランダム化比較試験（RCT）12件・4万5,380例を対象にシステマチックレビューとメタ解析を行い、副反応を心配する被検者の心理的不安に由来するノセボ効果について検討。その結果、プラセボ接種群における全身性副反応の発現率は1回目接種後で35％、2回目接種後で32％に上り、ワクチン接種群との比較から1回目接種後では全身性副反応の76％、2回目接種後では同52％がノセボ効果に相当することが示されたとJAMA Netw Open（2022; 5: e2143955）に発表した。今回の結果を受け、「ノセボ効果についても情報開示と教育を行うことが有用である」としている。
1回目接種後の局所性副反応はプラセボ群16.2％、ワクチン群66.7％
Haas氏らは、医学データベースMedline（PubMed）およびCochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials（CENTRAL）に2021年7月14日までに掲載された論文を検索。16歳以上の成人を対象に不活性プラセボ（生理食塩液など）接種群とワクチン接種群における接種後7日以内の副反応を個別に評価したSARS-CoV-2ワクチンのRCT 12件（プラセボ群2万2,578例、ワクチン群2万2,802例、計4万5,380例）を抽出し、ランダム効果モデルによるメタ解析に組み入れた。主要評価項目はプラセボ群における副反応全般、全身性副反応、局所性（接種部位）副反応の発現率とした。
